Pellets
What are wood pellets?
Wood pellets can be described as sticks of pressed wooden material – i.e. wood fibres with a high energy content – and usually consist of sawdust or shavings. Wood pellets are approximately 6 or 8mm in diameter and 2-3cm long. The production of pellets can be seen as a way of “refining sawdust” into a storable and transport-efficient fuel that can displace large amounts of energy from the forest to the end users.
What are wood pellets made of?
Wood pellets are made of residual products from the wood industry, often in the form of sawdust or shavings.
Are forests intentionally felled to produce pellets?
No. Pellets are solely produced out of residual materials.
Are wood pellets environmentally friendly?
Yes. According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, pellets emit 19 kilograms of CO2/MWh, as opposed to, for example, heating oil (248 kilograms of CO2/MWh).
Is pellet combustion climate-neutral?
Yes. Burning pellets results in the same amount of CO2 as is absorbed by the original tree during its life cycle. Either way, the tree will eventually die and, even then, the same amount of CO2 will be emitted as when it is burnt.
How much carbon dioxide does the combustion of pellets emit?
According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, pellet combustion emits 19 kilograms of CO2/MWh.
Are pellets expensive?
No. Pellets are by far one of the most affordable forms of energy. See our comparative calculations at
What are the pellet price trends over time?
As with all raw materials, the price of pellets varies over time. However, when looking at its price development since 2009, it can be observed that the price of pellets has been the most stable compared to other fuels.
What is the availability of pellets in Sweden, the Nordic countries and Europe?
Availability is very good in Sweden, the Nordic countries and Europe. Current levels can be significantly increased should the need arise.
Does the use of pellets as fuel require special maintenance, supervision and upkeep?
Since pellets are a solid fuel, more ash is produced than when using fossil fuels such as oil or gas. However, present-day equipment is fully automatic in terms of sooting and ash feeding. As a rule, the plant undergoes one substantial maintenance operation per year.
How is ash from the use of pellets handled correctly?
Depends on each market, contact us for correct info.
Wood powder/pellet powder
When to use wood powder/pellet powder?
In cases where you need to have plants with power above 4 MW – and at the same time fast power regulation – wood powder is the best option. In addition, some industries rely on different bioenergy materials for their own production. That material can be dried and made into powder for combustion.
Why grind pellets into powder?
In cases where plants with power above 4 MW and fast power regulation are needed, wood powder is the best option.
How to grind pellets into powder?
A variety of mills for grinding wood pellets into wood powder are available on the market.
When should pellet powder be used instead of whole pellets?
In cases where plants with power above 4 MW and fast power regulation are needed, wood powder is the best option.
What is the difference between a pellet burner and a powder burner?
A pellet burner can only handle power up to 2 MW, whereas a powder burner can handle up to 50 MW.
Is it more expensive to burn powder than pellets?
Considering the use of wood pellets in both cases, there is no difference in fuel cost.
What are the advantages of wood powder over pellets?
In cases where plants with power above 4 MW and fast power regulation are needed, wood powder is the best option.
What are the disadvantages of powder?
Technically advanced plants with many components.
Other fuels
We use wood chips today. What is the difference between chips, pellets and powder?
Wood chips are usually the cheapest fuel, but also the “slowest” fuel, i.e. fast power regulation works poorly. A wood chip plant is also more expensive than a pellet plant and requires significantly more space as chip storage takes up a large area.
What is the price difference between the different types of fuel?
As with all forms of energy, prices change over time.
Does it matter whether dry or wet wood chips are used? Can they be used as fuel in BKtech energy plants?
No, they both work. It can be assumed that ‘the wetter, the cheaper’. However, the downside of using wet wood chips is that much of the energy is spent burning off the water in the wet wood chips, which results in lower energy production.
Does bio-oil work in BKtech energy plants?
Yes. However, it should be noted that the cost of bio-oil per MWh is higher than for wood pellets/wood powder.
We currently use natural gas. Why should we switch to another fuel and can we still use it in BKtech plants?
Natural gas is a fossil fuel, and a rather expensive one at that. Yes, it is possible to use natural gas in a BKtech plant. However, such use is discouraged as it has no positive effect, neither environmentally nor economically.
We currently use LPG. Why should we switch to another fuel and can we still use it in BKtech plants?
LPG is a fossil fuel, and a rather expensive one at that. Yes, it is possible to use natural gas in a BKtech plant. However, such use is discouraged as it has no positive effect, neither environmentally nor economically.
What exactly is meant by biofuel?
Biofuels is a collective term for fuels made from organic material, i.e. plants, sludge from treatment plants or slaughterhouse waste. Biofuels act as energy carriers from which energy can be extracted. Biofuels can be gaseous such as biogas, liquid such as ethanol or solid such as chips and pellets.
What is BKtech's outlook on the future of potential fuels and their development?
Biofuels will be important as we move to fossil-free and renewable energy production. Solar and wind power alone will not solve all energy problems. As far as energy prices are concerned, all energy is likely to become more expensive over time. However, the price difference between renewable and fossil-free fuels compared to fossil fuels will either persist or increase.
How does fuel management work?
When using wood pellets, the fuel is stored in a silo. The fuel is then transported to a burner that is mounted in the plant. It is the same for wood powder, but before being burned, the fuel also passes through a mill and a doser. When it comes to wood chips, it is basically the same principle, but the chips are stored in woodchip stores that take up a lot of space.
Bioenergy
What is bioenergy?
Bioenergy is a renewable energy source produced from biomass, such as plants and plant parts. Bioenergy can contribute to climate change mitigation.
What is the difference between biofuel and bioenergy?
None.
Is bioenergy renewable?
Yes, if the biomass used meets renewability standards.
Is bioenergy environmentally friendly?
Yes, since it is both renewable and fossil-free.
What is meant by residual products?
Residual products are materials that are unintentionally produced or formed as a result of or in the process of manufacturing a product. For example, sawdust is formed when boards are sawn from timber.
How do residual products fit into a circular economy?
Using residual products improves the circular economy, as does all recycling.
What is the main field of application of bioenergy?
Today, bioenergy is mainly used for heating, mostly in district heating networks. However, the industrial use of bioenergy is growing year by year.
Can I lower my energy costs by using bioenergy?
Yes. Bioenergy is usually the most affordable form of energy.

Bioenergy is a renewable energy source and thus contributes to a circular economy.
What financing options does BKtech offer?
In addition to the possibility for you to invest in a plant, we also offer leasing and energy supply contracts whereby we own the plant and you purchase fossil-free energy from BKtech.
What pay-off time can be expected?
The pay-off time is largely determined by your consumption of fossil fuels. The higher the consumption, the shorter the time. In most cases, and at today’s energy prices, about 2-4 years.
When is it worth investing in a new energy plant?
It all depends, of course, on the type of plant (steam, hot water, hot oil or heating) required. If you have a consumption of at least 700 MWh/year, your pay-off time will be approximately 2-4 years. Switching to a new fossil-free energy plant always pays off for our climate.
